Context Sensitivity of Relational Nouns

We present findings that relational nouns are more contextsensitive than entity nouns in two conceptual combination recognition tasks. Across two experiments, we investigated people’s ability to recognize entity nouns and relational nouns either in the same context as at encoding or in a different context. We found that (1) participants showed greater recognition sensitivity for entity nouns th...

Can Relationality be Distinguished from Abstractness in Noun Mutability?

Previous studies have suggested that relational concepts are more mutable—more prone to change meaning in context— than entity concepts even when both relational and entity concepts are denoted by nouns (Asmuth & Gentner, 2005; Feist & Férez, 2007). However, relationality is a complex dimension, and is highly correlated with other factors such as imageability and abstractness. In the current re...

Relational categories are more mutable than entity categories.

Across three experiments, we explore differences between relational categories-whose members share common relational patterns-and entity categories, whose members share common intrinsic properties. Specifically, we test the claim that relational concepts are more semantically mutable in context, and therefore less stable in memory, than entity concepts. We compared memory for entity nouns and r...

Node-based Induction of Tree-Substitution Grammars

Traditionally, syntactic parsing is done using probabilistic context-free grammars (PCFGs) or variants thereof, as there are standard efficient methods for parsing with PCFGs and for extracting them from a corpus. However, PCFGs do not accurately represent many dependencies in natural language. For example, many determiners can only occur with certain types of nouns. Determiners like a and anot...
